eControl Series X Conversion

TECHNICAL INFORMATION

The eControl System, released by a third party company in 2021, rose to popularity during the energy crisis due to its flexibility and efficiency compared to traditional 'always on' aga cooker systems.

As very flexible system, it can be installed into one of our fully refurbished aga cookers, or as a conversion for your existing Aga Cooker.

eControl - The Control Panel

The eControl System utilises electric elements above and below the cast iron ovens to allow even distribution of heat.

Each cast iron oven and each hotplate can be individually controlled with separate temperature dials.

The Hotplates:

They are independent from each other and can both reach boiling temperatures. They are controlled via sliding temperature scale control dials. They MUST be turned OFF (or to eco) when not in use - overheating results in an out-of-warranty repair.

The Ovens:

The target temperature of the ovens will be displayed in the respective screens, with a small green indicator light behind frosted glass, to display when the oven is ready to be used.

The hotcupboard section (simmering/warming ovens) on our 4 oven eControl models are non-adjustable in temperature and controlled with one simple ON/OFF button.

You also have the option of connecting an external fan to assist with oven ventilation extraction.

eControl Conversion - The Element Setup

RH Hotplate Element: 1500w

LH Hotplate Element: 2000w

Oven Element (Top): 1000w

Oven Element (Middle): 750w

Oven Element (Bottom): 750w

3 Oven LH Top Oven Element - 750w

3 Oven LH Bottom Oven Element - 750w

4 Oven Hotcupboard Element: 750w

eControl Ceramic InstaHeat Hotplate: 2500w

(Made specifically by eControl. Replaces the RH hotplate)

The placement of the eControl elements improves heat up times but mimics traditional cooking styles. Due to these elements targeting direct heat to the original cast iron ovens, there are a few redundant parts.

The old traditional cast iron conductions and convection ducts are removed, alongside the burner pit, cast barrels and heavy cast hotplates.

The original cast iron ovens are modified slightly to make way for the new eControl thermostats and venting. The eControl oven elements are strategically placed around the Right Hand ovens, and the new hotplates are fitted (with their integrated elements). A new insulation blanket is wrapped below, around and above the ovens to reduce excess heat loss and keep your energy bills down.

eControl Conversion - The Pros and Cons

In line with our business ethos of honesty and transparency, we will always give you the pros and cons for your choice of Aga Cooker or Conversion. Being open about the strengths and potential shortfalls of each option, allows us to manage expectations and give you the absolute best solution for your lifestyle.

Advantages of the eControl Conversion:

  • Innovative company - constantly improving the system.
  • Aesthetically pleasing glass control panel.
  • Mimics the oven heat distribution of a traditional model.
  • Hotplates are independently controlled from 0c up to 370c.
  • Hotplates are both capable of reaching boiling temperatures.
  • ECO Mode for improved efficiency and even faster heat up times.
  • Manually set temperatures for each oven.
  • Digital temperature displays for each cast iron oven.
  • High spec insulation throughout.
  • Hotplates can be left on ECO 24/7 for efficiency.
  • Ability to add third party ON/OFF timer to the power supply.
  • Option to add an external fan for assisted oven vent extraction.
  • InstaHeat ceramic electric hob available for instant heat.
  • More insulation used during the conversion process (vs other conversion kits).

Disadvantages of the eControl:

  • Newer company on the market (EST 2021)
  • Top runner of the Roasting Oven is occupied by a removable metal baffle plate to dissipate heat.
  • Inconsistencies with aesthetic aspects (different LED screen colours, badge colours, matt/gloss displays etc. None affect functionality).
  • Floor of the ovens can be hotter than a traditional model - a grill shelf may be required if cooking on the floor for long periods.
  • Fixed power cable length from the control panel (300mm from the cooker). Additional cost for added length.
  • No temperature displays or markings for hotplates.
  • Hotplates can only be left on ECO mode (reduced temperature) when the lids are closed.
  • Hotplates turn a permanent dark, patchy grey/blue colour after use.
  • On 4 oven models, the hotcupboard element cassette reduces the space in the bottom LH oven.
  • On 4 oven models, the hotcupboard is only controlled via on/off button - no temperature control is available.
  • No induction hob option available.
  • More difficult for engineers to replace elements - vs ElectricKit.
  • No integrated WiFi option - only available with a third party timer.
  • Strong smells after first switch on, due to adhesive tape and sealants. Ventilation may be required for the first few hours at least.

We also offer the popular, reliable, ElectricKit System, as an alternative option for conversion.

ElectricKit vs eControl Comparison

eControl Conversion - The Electric Requirements

The electric requirements depend on which model and configuration you're looking for. Each electric connection point must be directly next to the aga cooker, not behind. Our unique pre-installation guide goes into more details on what is required for the system.

2 Oven eControl Conversion System:

1 x 32amp supply.

3 Oven eControl Conversion System:

1 x 40amp supply.

4 Oven eControl Conversion System:

1 x 32amp supply.

If you have the InstaHeat hob upgrade, your electric requirements for the whole system should be upgraded to a 40amp supply.

Stuck with Electrical Requirements?  Our ESSE Cookers run from 2 household switches, and have induction hobs included as standard.

eControl Running Costs

The eControl running costs depend on a few factors, such as how many ovens you have turned on, what temperature they're set to and any hotplate upgrades you have.

As a rough guide, using a 0.24p per kw tariff, you can expect the below running costs from an eControl Converted Aga Cooker:

Top oven running at 180c for 12hrs per day:

£0.64 per day. Or £4.34 per week.

Hotplate running at simmering 12hrs per day:

£1.12 per day, or £7.86 per week.

You can choose to replace your right-hand hotplate with a ceramic hob for even cheaper hotplate running costs and instant cooking whenever needed.

If you're going to be turning your cooker on/off more than, say, three times a day, then we usually recommend using a slumber/baking temperature (180c) in the Roasting Oven 24/7, You can cook most things perfectly, and you can always boost it quickly if you need fierce heat.

Aga Cookers With eControl - Venting Options

Cookers with the eControl Conversion are normally room-venting so they can be located anywhere in the kitchen.

You'll have a small vented shroud sitting at the back of the top plate, in-between your lids.

A 28mm copper pipe will be hidden underneath this shroud, which brings the hot air from your ovens into the room.

If you are converting your own aga cooker with an external oven fan fitted, you can plug this into the control panel - just specify that you need the fan configuration when ordering.

eControl Heat Up Times

With a traditional 'always on' Aga Cooker, you don't have to think about heat up times - it's always on! Unfortunately, this means that it's always using energy (even overnight). The eControl Conversion makes your Aga Cooker efficient, giving you the flexibility of turning parts on and off, as well as turning temperatures up and down. If you'd like to turn your eControl System off, or on a more efficient 'slumber' setting, you will need to know about pre-heat times

Top Right Hand Oven

the below are approximations

Roasting (220c) in 1hr 32 mins (from cold).

Baking (180c) in 1hr 15 mins (from cold).

The timings above include a 30 minute temperature stabilisation period as recommended by the manufacturer.

The Bottom Right Hand Oven will have some passive heat when the Top Right Hand Oven is on. When on traditional roasting setting, it will act similar to a simmering oven.

Hotplates

the below are approximations

Simmering Temp in 10 mins (from cold).

Boiling Temp in 15 mins (from cold).

We always recommend using your RH Hotplate as your preferred hotplate, since it may be already warm due to the ambient heat if the ovens below are already on.

Reducing your hotplate usage, or upgrading to a ceramic/induction hob upgrade will reduce your running costs and give you instant hotplate cooking whenever needed.

Want faster heat up times?  Consider upgrading your aga cooker to an ESSE Cooker.

Get Roasting Oven temperatures in just 15 minutes PLUS an integrated grill and induction as standard!
